Keith Haring (1958-90) was one of the most renowned young artists in urban culture in the 1980s.
Inspired by the graffiti artists whose works littered the New York subway cars, Haring began to draw with white chalk on the black paper used to cover the vacant billboards. The subway became, as Haring put it, a "laboratory" for carrying out his ideas. Before his death, Haring created a foundation in his name to maintain and enhance his legacy, aimed at helping children and organizations against AIDS
Keith Haring died of AIDS in New York in February 1990, at the age of 31.
